The stone was discovered in 1811. It was first discovered in 1811 in Greenland, but became important as an ornamental stone in 1891 when vast deposits of fine material were discovered in Ontario, Canada. Back in January 2018, it was brought to the attention of one of us (RL) that a gentleman named Erik Rintamaki was selling pebbles and cobbles of fluorescent syenite that he had collected along the Lake Superior shore in Luce and Chippewa counties of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, marketing them under the unofficial name "yooperlites". The royal blue of Sodalite is often mixed with veins of white.
It was first found in Greenland and then located in Ontario, Canada. Much of it is the typical gray or yellow variety, and almost all of it fluoresces a bright orange. Sodalite often has white veining, and it can be confused with lapis lazuli.
Sodalite gains its name from the sodium content found within this mineral.
Lazurite, nosean, hauyne, and tugtupite are related minerals that together with sodalite is known as the sodalite group. Tumbled rough Sodalite is also strung and used in jewelry.
Princess Sodalite Mine: The Princess Sodalite mine is located 4km east of Bancroft, on Highway 28. Euhedral, transparent crystals are found in northern Namibia and in the lavas of Vesuvius, Italy.
Large blue Sodalite masses come from Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, Brazil; and tiny colorless crystals are found in Italy at Monte Somma, Vesuvius; and at Vico Lake, near Viterbo. (Taken from the May 2018 issue of Mineral News) - by Raymond Laughlin and Shawn Carlson . The sodalite from this mine varies in its intensity of blue. Hackmanite is a higher vibration variety of Sodalite, and its color is generally pink or lavender purple. Sodalite is typically a deep blue mineral that gets its name from its sodium content. Nepheline Syenite gneiss is the geologic name of the rock found … Smaller deposits are found in South America (Brazil and Bolivia), Portugal, Romania, Burma and Russia. Sodalite is a relative of Lapis Lazuli and Lazurite. Hackmanite is found principally in Mont-Saint-Hilare and Greenland. Green Sodalite - Found in the Kangerlussaq area, green sodalite is a vibrant green under day light, much of it gem quality. It has tenebrescent qualities where its color can appear brightened when left in strong sunlight, but fade when kept in the dark or exposed to x-rays. As Scarce As Hens Teeth Fine grades of Sodalite are found in only a few places in the world. Small amounts of sodalite are present in many specimens of lapis lazuli. Occurring typically in massive form, sodalite is found as vein fillings in plutonic igneous rocks such as nepheline syenites. It is never found stably together with quartz, but does occur with nepheline, cancrinite and other low-silica minerals.
Evidence of Sodalite has been found in this city’s ruins and would have killed one of the most significant early historians and crystallographers, Pliny the Elder. With the demise of Pompeii, the world lost a great sage of crystals as well as all knowledge of this great calming stone. It is found in many shades of blue, and only blue; it shares many qualities of the stone Lapis Lazuli and it therefore often mistaken for it. These minerals are found in veins running through Plutonic igneous rocks. Unlike haüyne and nosean, sodalite is virtually CO 2-free (Bellatreccia et al., 2009).
Description: Sodalite is a blue to white mineral found in silica-undersaturated igneous rocks and their metamorphosed equivalents. The premier locality for Sodalite, where it occurs in large, well-formed crystals and also occurs in the Hackmanite variety, is the historic Lazurite mines at Sar-e-Sang, Kokcha Valley, Badakshan Province, Afghanistan. Where is sodalite found? Ideally sodalite has Na 4 Cl in the two cages in the unit cell.
It possesses a darker shade of blue than its sister stones. In some sodalites, the aluminosilicate cages appear to contain only Na and Cl according to EDS spectra. It is never found stably together with quartz, but does occur with nepheline, cancrinite and other low-silica minerals. Sodalite is a member of the Sodalite group with tugtupite, hauyne, lazurite and nosean.Although similar to Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite hardly contains Pyrite, which is a basic material in Lapis Lazuli.
