Perhaps not to the degree Sidney takes it, but in relation to the things we have to do to get where our heart wants to be. This film reminds us that real love is often within reach, but we are often too bruised and too broken to see or try and claim it. Director and co-writer Michael Curtis Johnson’s Hunky Dory is as striking and beguiling as is the film’s protagonist, Sidney, a “glam rock dilettante” who, after the seeming disappearance of his ex, finds himself taking care of his loving 11-year-old son, Georgie.

Throw in a dash of Rock 'n' Roll High School, and add a pinch of American Graffiti and you'll have Hunky Dory. Hunky Dory introduced a kinder, gentler David Bowie after two heavy albums laden with mythological imagery and pleasant dread—not that this album doesn't also include heavy doses of the latter. The film flows unexpectedly gently, evincing a care and dignity for its characters, giving them room to breathe and exist, organically. His complete transformation was quite outstanding, where he literally disappears in Sidney's skin.
As others have said, the lead character's morals/boundaries are very much in question if not a bit insane, but this is a likable and enjoyable film that ends on a high note.

Hunky Dory is every man’s and every woman’s story. Bowie announced the outlook flip on the chipper opener "Changes" and then doubled down on the even more so "Oh! Sidney is a rock… Hunky Dory focuses on an ex-rocker turned drag queen (Pais), who is put upon by his divorced wife to take care of his 11 year old son when it’s not his week.
