The U.S. Coast Guard operated the lighthouse until 1966.
The lighthouse is currently home to a museum filled with the rich history of Gasparilla Island. Barrier Island Parks Society, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit Citizen Support Organization, CSO. The lighthouse building is almost identical to the nearby keeper’s quarters. The society commissioned a restoration of the lighthouse, including the installation of a replica of its original fresnel lens.
